I just have to say that I am SO stinking proud of my husband. Shawn found out last night that he's been inducted into the "Alpha Omega Alpha" (AOA) Honor Society as a 3rd year student!! No more than one-sixth of a medical school's graduating class can be members of AΩA; most of these are elected as fourth-year students ("senior AΩA") but up to one-quarter of them may be elected as third-year students ("junior AΩA"). This is a HUGE accomplishment and I just think that Shawn's worked too hard to let this go unnoticed ;o) There are only three Honor Societies that you can be nominated for and accepted into in Med School and Shawn is officially a member of ALL THREE!
The first is the Landacre Society which is for those that earned the Roessler Scholarship in order to do a research project in their first/second year of school.
The second is the Gold Humanism Honor Society where their peers are asked to rank in order up to three students from their class who best fit each of seven statements including: “has an exceptional interest in service to their community” and “whose honesty and integrity are above approach.” A committee of students, staff, and faculty makes the final decision.
The third is the AOA which is the most prestigious. Only the top medical students accross the country are elected, based on criteria such as grades, leadership, ethics, and so on. As the years have gone by, membership in AΩA has become highly sought after, especially for those applying to competitive residencies. The importance of AΩA membership to residency applications varies among specialties and programs. For highly competitive specialties, it can offer a significant advantage - which will help him when applying to ENT residency programs later this year.
I'm so happy that he has been rewarded for his hard work! Praise the Lord!!
